Toyota plans to start production and sales of a small electric sedan with batteries by BYD Co Ltd. by the end of 2022.
As it became known, the bZ3 sedan, developed jointly with BYD for China only, will be the second model of Toyota’s new Beyond Zero (bZ) battery electric vehicle (BEV) series, which has been criticized by activists and green investors.
The Japanese had planned to present the bZ3, which uses BYD’s less bulky Blade batteries, at the Beijing Motor Show in April, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The car is about the same size as a Toyota Corolla, but with a larger rear section.
The price of the bZ3 has not yet been determined, but one source said that it is likely to cost 200 thousand yuan (28 thousand US dollars – ed.), which is almost 30% cheaper than the basic version of the Tesla Model 3.
